The brunette sat in her chair in the café tapping her foot on the floor with her book in front of her face. It was five in the evening on a Tuesday and most people had gotten their coffee this morning causing her and her staff to be very busy for the first four hours of the morning.
She looked up from her book and glanced around the room and saw people were still absentmindedly sitting with their coffee mugs or to-go cups with laptops, books, mp3 players and ipods attached by headphones to their ears, or other objects to distract them while they sat in silence. A soft ballad playing in the background Kendra sighed softly and went back to her book.
Sometimes she had wondered why she had bothered opening this café in the first place, all of these people were strangers to her and the workload was sometimes too stressful to manage alone. The days were long, extremely long considering she usually was there sometimes twenty hours a day.
Kendra didn’t need to sleep, being a vampire had that one perk. But it did make her miss her family and her friends, even though all of them were in and out of the café at some point during the day or week. She saw Austin every morning before he went to work at the garage and Reagan every morning before school. Wyatt didn’t drink coffee unless he was with Nikolai, and neither did Alice and sometimes Kendra saw Allison in the afternoon before her shift at the tattoo shop. But sometimes it got lonely.
“Ma’am do you work here?” She heard a voice, causing her head to snap up quickly. A woman who was quite tall stood in front of her a purse slung over one shoulder as she fidgeted with the strap on it.
“Yes, I own the café. Is there something I can get for you?” Kendra stood up with her book, feeling guilty that she hadn’t been behind the counter. But it had been dead for hours and if anyone was going to make a complaint it wasn’t as if they could go any higher than her.
Grace looked at Kendra and noticed her name tag, “Ask me about my favorite blended coffee!” With a smile next to the words with her name written above it.
“What’s your favorite blended coffee?” Grace asked with a smile pulling at her lips.
Kendra looked taken aback and smiled, not many people had ever bothered to look at her name tag and the message on it. Mostly it was just a formality at this point and she wore it out of habit. “Uhh- well. I really enjoy caramel and chocolate together. People in the past have called it a Snickers mocha but it can be called whatever you want I suppose.” She had stuttered over her words and felt her cheeks heat up. She had once had that explanation all planned out for when someone asked, but when no one ever asked she had just forgotten it.
“I’ll have one of those,” Grace said with a wide smile plastered on her face. “I’m Grace by the way,” She said holding her hand out to shake while Kendra looked at it curiously. Kendra wasn't always good with strangers. She was taught to be wary of those around her, just in case someone was after her. After the incident with her "mother" she didn't really trust anyone anymore. Even the people who came in and out of the cafe she had to look at more than once to make sure there was nothing off about them.
“Coming right up, I’ll have your total for you when I’m finished,” Kendra replied. She put all of the ingredients into a blender and placed it on top of the bottom portion and hit start, waiting for everything to blend together before pouring it into a cup and adding whipped cream on the top.
“One Snickers blended mocha- or whatever.” She said before handing it over Grace.
“I have to tell you something, and I don’t know if you’re going to like what I have to say.” Grace said, almost interrupting Kendra.
She raised her eyebrows at her and stepped back slightly waiting for something really bad to happen. She pursed her lips and sighed, “What?”
Grace took a sip of the coffee and set it back down on the counter, pausing to find the words. “I’m your sister.”
Kendra blinked and was almost too stunned to open her mouth. “See, I know that’s not true. You’re lying to me. What’s really going on? Is my mother back? How about my father, did he come with?” Kendra almost wanted Austin to be here to talk some sense into everyone, to get Grace to leave and never come back. Maybe she could get a Mikaelson down here to scare her away.
She rolled her eyes at Kendra before taking out a necklace that held the Hart Family Crest, a lavender colored stone with accented features circling all around it. She had only ever seen her mother wear it and even then it was a distant memory. “You stole that from my mother,” Kendra said flatly, reaching up to grab the chain and yank it from Grace’s neck. Grace lowered her eyebrows and stepped back, placing the necklace back under her shirt.
“No, I didn’t, actually. I’m surprised she didn’t steal it back from me when she kicked me out.” Grace spat at her, looking at her confused expression painted all over her face. “You don’t know anything do you? Do you really think Anna Hart was really the picture of perfection she wanted you and everyone else to believe she was?”
When she had spoken the words ‘Anna Hart’ Kendra pursed her lips and looked down at the floor. Maybe she really was telling the truth?
“My mom and dad died, literally killed almost right in front of me, before they had the chance to have any more kids. If you’re my sister how do I not know you?” She had never seen a single picture of Grace before in her life, her parents had never mentioned her and if she was older than what happened to her?
Grace rolled her eyes in frustration that she wasn’t understanding this. She knew Kendra could be an airhead but this was taking it too far. “Because I’m older than you, that’s why. I was thirteen when I got kicked out. I found out our mother was having an affair and she wanted me to stay quiet about it. Not only that, but I refused to practice magic. The coven was up to something dangerous and I didn’t want to be involved. I knew it would more than likely get me killed whatever they were up to so I backed out. She thought I just had a crush on someone and was ‘distracted’ by them but that was not the case. Yes, I liked them but that’s not the whole story. When I walked in on our mother cheating on our father I threatened to tell the coven since they thought I was so distracted that my mother also was.”
“Our mother cheated on dad?” Kendra questioned, not even caring if Grace was lying.
“Yes. With a woman.”
“With a woman.”
“That’s what I said, isn’t it? She was still sleeping with dad every now and then, don’t try to imagine that whatever you do, it’s not pretty. She didn’t want him to question anything that was going on. Being with someone of the same sex back then wasn’t okay, I would know. But I caught her on accident and she punished me, scared of course, that I was going to tell the coven what she was doing. Instead she turned it around and they banished me because I refused to practice magic. I still remember the look in her eye when they made me leave, almost sorry that it was happening. And then she turned her back on me so I knew it wasn’t all that sincere.”
Kendra sat stunned and tried to speak, no words coming out of her mouth. She looked at her sister curiously and tried to think of something to say. She had so many questions, but the one that was eating away at was one. “Are you telling me our mom was gay?”
Grace shook her head, “From what I’ve learned over the years, especially very recently, she was probably bisexual. She loved our dad, she really did. I don’t know if she still did by the time they both passed away, but something happened back then that caused her to fall out of love temporarily. They weren’t happy, I think because of me. I was rebelling quite a bit and I didn’t want to follow their rules and their plans for me.
I overheard their conversation. She told her she would leave Harold if it meant they could be together. That they could get a small cottage together and figure something out, they would find money somehow. She didn’t buy it; she knew Anna wouldn’t leave him. She still had love in her heart for him every time she talked about him. The other woman broke it off before they ever had the chance to make more of it. She loved them both, truly and fully. But I think she was afraid to leave Harold. She wanted a future with her, but she had already made a future with him and back then you stuck to that no matter what other feelings you felt for someone else. At least in the coven you did. I think if she were alive today she wouldn’t have been so afraid of it.” Grace shrugged her shoulders.
Kendra nodded slowly before making herself a mug of coffee. There was so much her brain had to process and she still wasn’t quite believing that this woman Grace was her sister, let alone that her mother had had an affair.
“Listen, I can go if you want me to. I just wanted to introduce myself. I knew you existed but I knew that you didn’t know I did. She found out she was pregnant with you right before I got kicked out, which was perfect timing for them.”
Grace went to leave with her drink but Kendra stopped her. “Wait. How are you even still alive? Do witches really live that long?”
“I could ask you the same question,” Grace said with a smile.
She looked up from her book and glanced around the room and saw people were still absentmindedly sitting with their coffee mugs or to-go cups with laptops, books, mp3 players and ipods attached by headphones to their ears, or other objects to distract them while they sat in silence.
